"Very lucky indeed," Justin said, his voice trailing off as he began to lose himself in thought. It was possible for Rox not to have been injured, at least he could see. But she'd probably be covered in bruises in other places, at least he thought. That didn't explain her reaction, tohugh. Justin thought that he was a pretty reader of people and it had looked like Rox had tensed up when he noticed her lack of wounds. She was probably just surprised, that's all. But a little thought in his head made him think. There's no way she could've gone through that without a scratch. I saw her fall. She should be bleeding in several places or have cuts, judging from those rips on her clothes. Then he shook his head as Rox offered help. "Ah, thanks," he said, grabbing her arm with one hand and pushing himself off the rock with the other. Once up, what felt like fire ran through his veins as his weight was distributed over his injured leg. He did his best to muffle his gasp and he quickly leaned against Rox as he took a tentative step. When he was satisfied that he was doing the best he could, he said, "Yeah, you're right. I'm okay. Let's go." He began to stumble along, leaning on Rox so he wouldn't collapse. ((Feel free to god-mod Justin walking or anything, since he's kinda depending on Rox to help move, now. ))

It was slow going with Rox supporting most of the weight, but considering their situation, she felt they were making pretty good time. Still... as the sun got lower in the sky it was becoming more and more obvious that they wouldn't reach their vehicle before night time. She decided to ask Justin what they should do since she wasn't sure if they should keep walking or set up camp.
Between breaths Rox asked, "So what do we do when the sun goes down? Do we keep walking? Do we take refuge in the trees? Send smoke signals?" Rox shrugged her shoulders underneath Justin's arm. She figured he would want to get to a hospital as soon as possible and they would probably only be about a mile from their destination when they had to stop, but there was a very real risk that they could get lost at night.
Not to mention the wolves and bears and mountain lions that might sneak up on them in the darkness. A shiver ran up Rox's spine. She hadn't seen any yet, and doubted she would, but the thought still made her nervous all of a sudden. Despite the fact that she could turn into a bear.

Bristletooth crouched down as he silently stole through the weeds and over loose dirt like a phantom. His eyes were locked on his target: the grey brush rabbit, browsing on some grass not twenty feet away. If Bristletooth had been a human, he would’ve been licking his chops already. He halted about five or six yards away, blending into the lengthening shadows of an overhanging rock. There, he began calculating distances and angles as only cougars do and prepared to attack. Then, just before Bristletooth sprang, a series of noises sounded from a bit farther down the mountain. The rabbit stopped chewing and froze, listening to the sound. From its new angle, it could undoubtedly see Bristletooth so the feline froze as well. Then, in a blink of an eye, the rabbit had bounded forward and made a rapid dash to its hole, obviously disturbed by the alien sounds. Seeing his prey escape, Bristletooth made a desperate leap and cleared the space between him and the lagomorphs. Even with his claws extended and his liquid strength and speed, the catamount only received a few grey hairs from the rabbit before it vanished down its hole. Hissing quietly to itself, Bristletooth ignored the hunger pains in his stomach and turned his attention to what had caused the noise that had spooked his prey. He’d never heard the sound before and like all mountain lions have been saying since the beginning of their lineage, Curiosity Caught the Critter. And oh would that critter, if it had indeed made the noises, pay in blood and nourishment when he got caught. Right foot, okay. Left foot, AAARGH! Right foot, okay. Left foot, AARGH! The simple thoughts kept Justin occupied as they meandered around the mountain. In fact, he hadn't even noticed the hunger pains in his stomach or how much time had passed, or anything else for that matter. Rox's question suddenly made him remember the other things. "I think we should stop and make shelter. The light's getting too dim too continue on much further. Trees or a cave or something will work just find since we'll only be here overnight. That okay with you? In fact, there might be a cave just over there,” he said, pointing, “if I remember right and we’re close enough to a trail. There’s some sandwiches and water in the cooler so we won’t starve or dehydrate and I’ve got matches…” Justin trailed off to give Rox the option of where’d they go. The situation they were in was serious, but it wasn’t majorly life threatening. And they could find a trail in the morning and Justin had been around the mountain so many times that he should be able to lead them back to the car in a short time. And this would give the two of them more “quality” time together, as Justin wanted to put it.

"Let's go for the caves," Rox suggested. "I wouldn't mind having a wall to my back when I'm in the middle of nowhere in the dark. And that way if it rains unexpectedly, we'll probably stay dry too. But I think it said on the news that it is supposed to be sunny for the next few days..." Rox trailed off as she thought about how she wouldn't mind being somewhere where she could watch TV right now. She wondered if they would be on a news station right now. She could imagine the story title. Hikers Run into a Slippery Slope of Bad Luck, or something else just as corny. But then she realized, a bit glumly, that nobody even had the slightest clue that they were in trouble. It wasn't as if the avalanche they were in was big enough for people to notice it. And the two of them hadn't even been gone long enough for people to have started getting worried about them. They would be on their own for quite a while yet. When they neared the cave, Rox was planning on letting Justin rest while she collected a bit of firewood. But before she could even suggest that plan to him, by pure chance, Rox noticed a brown shape out of the corner of her eye move ever so slightly. Rox turned toward it immediately, but even then had trouble seeing anything. If there really was something there in the shadows, it blended in well. "I think I saw something over there, Justin." Rox pointed toward where the movement had been. ((OOC: feel free to do a bit of god modding at your own discretion. )

Bristletooth paused soon, listening for the direction in which he’d enact his vengeance. His ears picked up the soft hooting of an early owl, already out to catch its prey. He could hear the faint sounds of the scales of a snake sliding over some rocks. The twitters of a squirrel reached his ears, but there would be time for that later. In fact, Bristletooth heard several possible prey moving around, but he was hunting something else at the moment. Bristletooth finally located the exact position of the noise-makers. He sniffed the air, in effort to discover what they were. He cocked his head at the results. Not bear. Not sheep. Not rabbit. Not bird. Not anything. His attention was definitely peaked and so Bristletooth began following the…things, never once making a sound and hiding in the background. Now, nothing was between Bristletooth and his prey. He could easily see them, thanks to the reflective lenses in his eyes. They were reared up on two legs…like bird? But they looked more like squirrels. They had no wings; they had a pair of limbs with soft-looking claws on them. But they had no tail either; instead one had a large humplike deformity on it. And it appeared to be wounded as it moved with a limp. Bristletooth analyzed all the information. Yes, he believed he could fight them. They were bigger than him, but they looked as dangerous as a mule deer doe, without the sharp hooves. Soon however, the things entered a cave, one that was only a few sprints away from his own. He himself stopped between two shrubs, partly hiding in the cover presented by the foliage. In the ever increasing darkness, Bristletooth grew even braver. It was clear that the things were not of the night, as he had noticed them stumble several times and they were obviously seeking shelter. Everything of the night went hunting at night, not enter shelter and starve. He was just preparing to stalk even closer to the cave and its occupants when suddenly one of the things moved. Bristletooth froze as the thing began making strange noises, much like the ones that had startled the brush rabbit. His eyes narrowed as he imperceptivity began to slink backwards, melting into the shadows, not a moment too soon as the ground where he’d been suddenly flared into light. Justin had just sat down on a patch of dry leaves a few feet into the cave when Rox said that she’d seen something. Quickly, Justin opened the backpack and pulled out a small flashlight. Like any experienced wilderness adventurer, Justin always packed for almost every possibility. He flicked the switch and swung it around to where Rox was pointing. The light fell on a couple of bushes, exposing a blurred movement and several leaves shaking. What the…? “Whoa, you’re right, Rox,” Justin said, “We’d better be careful. This mountain is full of animals, including mountain lions and bears. But we’ll probably need a fire, since it can get pretty cold at night. Here’s what I’m thinking. We go ahead and eat right now, while we wait for whatever it is to leave. Then we get some firewood to build up a fire in the mouth, okay?” Justin had no idea that Rox had been planning to go and get forewood. “Most animals are scared of fire so that should protect tonight,” He continued. “IF that doesn’t work I’m sure we can find some weapons in here.” Justin was confident that they could protect themselves, even if he had to do it. That is why I brought it, afterall.

Rox sure was glad that Justin was there. Sort of. He had come up with a great-sounding plan in a matter of moments. It probably would have taken Rox an hour to come up with the same thing. The only down side to having Justin there was that she couldn't morph around him. If Justin wasn't there, Rox would be sitting at home sipping a soda by now.
Oh well. Not a lot she could do about it now. If that bear, or coyote, or whatever it was that she saw, decided to attack her when she went to go collect firewood, she would morph bear and not even think twice about it. She valued her life a lot more than SPECTER's stupid rules.
But she really, really, really hoped it wouldn't come to that.
Rox sat on a rock facing Justin as she chewed on her sandwich. She didn't really feel like talking even though it probably would have been a good idea to discuss sleeping preparations or something. As Rox took a swig from her water bottle she heard a sound like rustling leaves behind her. Before she could turn around she was pinned to the ground with teeth in her neck.
"Ahhhhh!" was the only thing running through Rox's brain. She struggled, but it didn't help any. She somehow concentrated through the pain and focused on the bear within.

Justin was almost mimicking Rox, facing her as he ate a sandwich. It was a good thing he’d brought extras. But he wasn’t thinking on that. Instead he was watching the growing darkness behind Rox. For some reason, he felt a bit protective of her, and he knew he wasn’t supposed to. It wasn’t that he held to strict, traditional views or anything, it was just that it could never work out. And why was he even thinking that far into anything anyways?! He shook his head and set his sandwich on its wrapper on a rock. He bent over to get a water bottle, stifling the urge to moan when he moved his leg the wrong way, when he heard a very close scream. Justin glanced up and froze, watching in horror as a mountain lion began sinking its teeth into Rox. Then it all sank in and he picked up a rock and chucked it at the beast, catching it flat on the side of the head. “AAAURRGG!” he yelled, to make senseless noise in hopes it scared the puma off. He flicked the beam of light from the flashlight across its face a few times and he jabbed a hand back into the backpack. After a minute or so, the light flicked off. But Bristletooth was already on the other side of the cave opening. Not a twig had cracked, a pebble displaced, nor a leaf brushed. His prey would have no warning. He was just bidding his time. It soon came. One of the creatures, the one more slight of the two, bent in half upon a rock. He stalked closer, effortlessly sliding his body through the shadows and over the dirt. Then he crouched, never taking his eyes off the figure. He waited some more, for the perfect opportunity. Then, he sprang! With lightning speed, the feline flew across the yards separating him and his prey and he land on the body, his teeth already in a good position. A light rumbling came from somewhere deep inside him and he relished what was going to happen. He bit down on the creature’s throat, stabbing into it with razor sharp teeth. Then something collided with his head. Fool! He had forgotten the other thing! He picked his head up from the neck to bite the other, but it was already at the other end of the cave. How did it move that fast? It never occurred to him that it could’ve been a projectile, as cougars had no need to know of those things. He returned to his former task but when he bit down, something odd happened. The neck seemed…tougher. He managed to sink his teeth in, but then they were somehow being pushed out. And the thing under him kept moving, flailing around much like sheep or deer did, but this was unusual. The scent was changing. Bristletooth sprang backwards, off the thing. Already he could see, hear, and smell that it was…different now. A muskier scent was coming from it. He could hear things like squelching, cracking, and many other sounds, vaguely reminiscent of what happened when he disemboweled a bighorned sheep or something. Had he already killed it? But no. He could see it was…changing. It was getting hairier, sturdier, stronger. He could tell that now, even in the near darkness. What was this thing? But Bristletooth still had an advantage. He leaped at the thing again, slashing out with claws and teeth, using the same attacks he’d use against any male cougar in his territory.

As Rox continued to be attacked, she also continued to change. Her screams became more like growls and her body became more massive. Not really a whole lot bigger, but bulkier. More muscular. Her clothes strained under her new shape and even ripped in a few places.
Rox was half bear now and felt like she might actually stand a chance in a fair fight. Even so, the mountain lion was still giving her some real trouble. It had caught her off guard and there were already a few bite marks in her hairy neck.
"Leave us alone!" Rox yelled in a gruff voice. She batted at the feline with one of her clawed bear-human hands. "We're not going to be on your menu tonight." Then Rox smiled as she felt her teeth grinding into the shape of pointed weapons.
"RoooOOOAAAaaaRRR!" Rox went in for the counterattack.

It was a deadly game of tooth and claw, fur and blood, that Bristletooth was engaged in. And he loved it. For years, he had been the sole ruler of this side of the mountain. No other puma ever challenged him, and no prey defeated him. But this was different. This was a challenge. And he was enjoying every moment of it, as shown by his purring. He slashed out with his claws but only got fur. Then he was battered away by a blow he hadn't seen coming. He rolled to his feet with liquid grace and pivoted on the spot before leaping high. The creature was bellowing roars of authority. Bristletooth was not to be outdone. With a bloodcurdling scream, like an opera singer at a monster movie, Bristleooth landed on the thing's back, swatting and biting. It was not long before he was knocked off again. This time he backed off, slowly slinking around around the beast. He attempted to cut it off from the other, weaker thing but he would get too close to this beast. He took a few mock swipes at it, testing its reflexes and weaknesses. He gazed at it with bright amber eyes, never getting distracted or anything. Then he found what he was looking for. In a brown blur, he streaked through the air towards the beast. He was almost there, a single claw grazed the thing's jaw when a streak of red light flared in front of his eyes and the world instantly grew black as he lost consciousness and collapsed in mid-leap. Justin leaned up against the wall, one arm supporting his weight, the other one pointed straight at the cat. In his hand, clutched as hard as possible, was a small, silver pistol-like weapon. Only, it wasn't a pistol. It was a Yeerk Dracon beam. When he was sure the mountain lion was down, he glanced away from the abomination in front of him as he quickly switched the settings on it. He pointed the weapon at the puma again and a red beam lanced out, striking through the feline's head, leaving a small, smoking hole in the forehead. It was dead. Justin was sorry it had to be this way. Why couldn't he have found the weapon sooner? It would've saved all of this from happening. "Rox," he said, as gently as possible. "Please, please demorph." It had all snapped into place the moment before Justin had fired. It had confirmed his fears. Rox was an Animorph. That was how she'd survived the fall without a mark. It was what had enabled her to miraculously survive a cougar attack for more than half a second. As he had searched through his backpack for the false bottom, he had kept an eye on her, or more accurately, the puma. It hadn't killed her on its first attack, and as he had looked for the gun, he had thought that he would end up shooting the predator over Rox's dead body. But no. Instead, she had morphed. <<I knew it,>> Incor 219 said, from his dark recesses in Justin's mind. <<I told you so,>> the yeerk said. <<Now stun her. I believe Alga has been looking for a new host. If you use the communicator now, Alonzo and Pege 347 can be here within an hour.>> Alonzo and Pege, Robert and Alga. Four other members of their resistance cell of voluntary Controllers.

<<W- what. What the- What was that!>> Rox asked, staring at the hole in the cougar's forehead in shock. She didn't even realize that she was using thought speech. And for the moment she forgot the she was more bear than human.
But then she looked over at Justin, wide-eyed. Her eyes were still human. She had blown her cover! And not just to anyone, but someone who owned a dracon beam. A yeerk weapon!
There was no hiding it now. Rox began to demorph. Her clothes were all stretched out, but moon bears weren't very big as far as bears went, so besides a couple new rips, her clothes were still in wearable condition.
"You can't be a-" Rox leered at Justin with her head turned slightly to the side. "No. There's no way. All the yeerks were made into nothlits." He probably just bought that illegally somewhere. Yeah, that had to be it. But why would he bring an alien weapon along on a hike? It didn't make sense...
"Justin..." Rox took a couple steps backward. She did NOT sign up for this. She planned on bolting, flying back to go get some of her teammates to help with the situation, and fly back. She could make it back before the bum-legged guy made it to his car, right?
Rox took another slow step backwards, keeping her eyes on the dracon wielder.

"No, Rox," Justin said, calmly yet still not shooting, "It's true. I'm a controller." He slowly lowered himself back down on the rock he'd been sitting on. His leg would be of no use to anyone if he didn't give it a chance to heal. "And I really, really, really wish you hadn't morphed. That would've made this so much easier." He sighed, going over the choices in his mind. Yeah, she couldn't remain free, or else Incor and the other yeerks would be executed for fleeing from becoming nothlits. Justin and the others would get off easily, but the yeerks were their friends. They couldn't let the secret escape, even if it meant killing her. But, he didn't want to do any of that. He didn't want her to become infested, because he knew it would be involuntary. And he didn't want her killed. He had had hopes that they could, possibly, have something between them. But that ship had sailed minutes ago. Almost lost in his reverie, Rox's backwards movement snapped him back to reality. With a split second spent to aim, Justin squeezed off a blast of the dracon beam. It missed her leg by inches, like his intention, and hit a stone, the energy in the blast causing it to shatter. His eyes widened as he saw what he'd done. He'd almost shot Rox. He knew what he had to do, what his heart was telling him to do. He lifted the dracon beam and prepared to throw it out of the cave when a spasm racked his body. <<NOOOO!>>screeched Incor in Justin's head. <<Noooo! She cannot escape! You fool! I'm taking over now!>> Swiftly, the yeerk expanded himself and filled the nooks and crannies of Justin's brain. He pulled the arm down and flicked a button on the weapon, changing the setting to stun. THe gun didn't have a vaporizing setting, unfortunately. This particular one was a newer model, used for heightened discretion and for ease of hiding. It was smaller than other dracon beams, but because of that, its energy packs weren't large enough to hold the programs or energy supplies to perform such a task. So Incor decided to stun Rox, since she could morph away almost any hole he shot in her. As he leveled the gun and squeezed the trigger, the blast went wide as Justin's other arm slammed into his hand, thowing the aim off. He quickly grabbed the gun and flung it against the stone wall with a yell. "Run, Rox! Hurry! I don't hav--" His voice cut out as Incor, now recovered from having been resisted for the first time, took control. Justin rolled to the floor, spasming and shaking as a battle for dominance ensued, all over the life of Rox. ((Urg, sorry for a horrible post like that. I couldn't think of a better wat to continue ))

Rox stopped moving the instant Justin fired the warning shot. There was no way she could have gotten away and she was foolish to think that she could have. It was all over for her. She had been captured by a yeerk and she never saw it coming. They were even more stealthy than the stories claimed.
But then Justin surprised her. He started fighting with himself and told Rox to run. The real Justin, the one Rox could only assume had been dominated by the yeerk's control for years, was resisting its control! Now was her chance. All she had to do was turn and run.
But she didn't. For some reason she couldn't explain, even to herself, Rox moved toward Justin when his internal battle drove him to the ground.
The controller no longer had its weapon and it was on the ground, so Rox figured she had the upper hand. But even so, she grabbed a fist-sized rock off the ground to use as a weapon if she needed to.
When she reached Justin, she moved in to put the weight of her knee on his throat and said, "Don't move, or I'll make sure neither of you get up again. Ever."

Justin flailed around, trying to drag himself away from the gun as Incor kept trying to drag him closer. Incor grabbed a rock embedded in the ground and tried to use it to drag Justin towards the dracon beam. Justin swung his legs around and pushed against another rock. Incor moved his legs and Justin flipped onto his stomach. He tried squirming away. Incor jerked his nose against a rock, drawing blood and causing a CRACK to be heard. He flipped over again to fight when he felt pressure on his throat. He listened to Rox and froze, eyes wide open at her threat. But before he could smile, move, fight, or anything, Incor took advantage over the distraction and took control. Immediately, Justin's fine features screwed up in a scowl. "You will be mine, human," Incor said, spitting out the last word. "I will infest you, enter your brain and sift through your memories. You cannot imagine what I will do to you." Venom dripped off every word as Justin's eyes reflected Incor's hate. No, Alga 735 would not be getting a new host. This one would be his. He swallowed, feeling the pressure of Rox's knee. He began to think, scouring his and Justin's minds, looking for ideas for escape. Maybe, just maybe, he could distract her long enough to get to the emergency communicator. All he had to do was press the button on it and the others would know that he was in trouble. And they would come. And take care of Rox. Incor decided to bid his time, knowing he would only get one chance.

When Justin, or whatever he was, made the threat to Rox that she would be its slave, she nearly bashed his skull in with the rock right then and there. She actually pulled back the rock in the air, but stopped herself before slamming it down. Rox wasn't a murderer, but it wasn't the thought of killing that restrained her. It was the thought of destroying Justin in order to destroy the yeerk. Especially after he had obviously just tried to help her get away by resisting control.
No, Rox wasn't ready to kill. Not yet anyway. Not like this.
So she spit on him instead. Aimed right at his bloody nose. "Nobody is getting in my mind but me, you filthy parasite. Now stay right there while I go get your dragon gun or whatever they are called. If you move I'll make sure to break your other leg so that you definitely won't make it down this mountain on your own. And you would have to hope there isn't another one of those around," she said, pointing to the heap of fur that was once a mountain lion. "Because you'll be a sitting duck."
Rox eased up with the pressure of her knee on his throat. Slowly. She wasn't going to trust this guy any further than she could throw him.

Incor glared up at Rox, seething. He ignored the pain in Justin's nose. It did not matter to him. It was Justin's nose, and therefore Justin's pain. He focused his attention on Rox's every movement, looking for an advantage in the situation. He scowled silently as Rox described what would happen if he moved while she was getting the Dracon beam. Incor never looked away as he waited for his chance with cold anticipation. The pressure on their shared throat eased up as Rox moved off of them. While adjusting her position, Incor acted. He grabbed her knees in a blur and flung them (and her) back as he rolled towards his backpack. As speedily as his broken host could, Incor jabbed his hand into the false bottom and grabbed the only other thing there. It was a simple device, really. Merely a button-sized disk of aluminum and plastic. The only thing on it was a button nearly the size of the device. In the second he touched the communicator, Incor pressed the button, activating the beacon. That's odd, Alonzo thought as he picked up his ringing iPhone. It's not even on. Then he looked at the app already up on the screen. It was a GPS-type system. It was composed of a map of the world that could switch from topographical, political, and physical maps, as well as do anything else a GPS could. However, there was something more added to the app, one that would never end up on iTunes. A little, flashing red dot appeared on the map with the name "Incor" beside it. It was just another example of yeerk intelligence. The little red dot represented an emergency communicator owned by a member of their human-resistance cell. However, emergency communicators were only activated in...Alonzo's eyes flared open as he understood the situation. He dialed in Robert's number. Without even a "hello", Robert said, "Yeah, I got it too. I'll pick you up on your roof." The other line clicked off and Alonzo/Pege 347 scrambled to get ready, revealing hidden caches of smuggled alien technology. He began putting things on, getting ready for anything; after all, emergency beacons basically only told that there was an emergency, not what kind. Within two minutes, Alonzo stood on top of his apartment building's roof, awaiting his ride. He and Pege lived a mile or so away from the four other members in their resistance cell, trying to keep all their eggs out of one basket in case they were ever discovered. Then, with only a slight gust of wind and a slight shimmer in the air, a doorway appeared and Alonzo entered the modified Bug Fighter. We'll be there soon, Incor and Justin, yeerks and humans alike thought.
