After making sure her mare Sky Song was settled into a stable nearby, and a battle won against the owner of the building over whether or not Shadow could stay in her apartment. Something about denying having a boyfriend. Why they would think Shadow was her boyfriend was beyond her.
She looked around her new place, walking through the apartment and then into the bathroom. Not a bad place. Definitely needed some "Emily" in it, but that wouldn't be too hard. She loved a challenge, and it was her place to do with what she wanted. And color was the first thing needed. She crinkled her nose at all the white.
Shadow had followed her everywhere, and now also crinkled his nose. She smiled and crouched, rubbing Shadow behind the ears. "Don't worry Shadow, we'll get it done." She glanced at one of her suitcases. For one reason or other, her new employers had asked her to cash out her bank account and bring it with her.
She was stupid for agreeing to it, but then... it was time to do crazy. At least, that's what her Father said.

Leroy turned a corner in the hallway just in time to see someone walking into the apartment next door. The apartment that SPECTER had sent them a letter about. Did that mean... ? A new animorph!
Their other apartment was pretty big, but with all of their members it was starting to get a little cramped. Leroy was actually kind of glad that the Mariposa animorphs would have a little more room to spread out. "Might as well introduce myself," Leroy said to himself.
He sidled up to the doorway and knocked.

Shadow growled at the knock, hair standing on end. "Be still Shadow," Emily scolded, going to the door and opening it. She noticed the young man standing outside and raised an eyebrow. "Can I help you?" she asked politely, wondering at this visit. Maybe he had been there for a while, and was going to greet her. But how would he know of her presense? She hadn't been that loud coming in. Ah well.
Shadow stood close to her side, eyes sharply on the young man, sitting but muscles tense. She glanced at the dog and rested her head on the labrador's head gently, firm yet gentle. Best way to calm him down. And to keep him from attacking.

"Hey there. I saw you enter from down the hall and thought I would stop and say hello." Leroy ignored the dog's semi-threatening posture and leaned against the doorway. He had been a dog before, so he wasn't too worried about the one next to this new girl. Wether it was a good or bad thing that he wasn't worried remained to be seen.
"My name is Leroy." He held out an arm so she could shake it if she wanted. "I live in the next apartment over. Me and a bunch of other people about my age live there. We were all hired for a sort of group project if you know what I mean." Leroy gave a wink. He hoped she knew he was talking about SPECTER but really wasn't sure if she would. Chances were that he would just end up looking like a really weird neighbor. But he had to be carful just in case this girl really wasn't the new animorph.

Emily looked at the man strangely. Specter? Oh... the men in black suits. Group project? "I'm Emily," she shook the man's hand politely, causing Shadow to relax slightly. There seemed to be no danger. "All I was told was that my skills would be useful here, and since things were smooth at my parents ranch, I agreed to come along."
She stepped aside, gesturing welcomingly. "Would you like to come in? I don't have much unpacked, but I'm sure I can grab something to drink and there are the cookies my Mom sent," she offered. There was a saying... keep your friends close, your enemies closer. And while he was not yet either of those things, since he had come to her place it would be better to find out now rather than later.

Leroy was glad to see that she was friendly and quickly took up the offer of cookies and something to drink. "Sure, I'll take a cookie if you got 'em. Who could resist that offer?" he said with a grin.
Unfortunately he still couldn't tell if she was really an animorph or not. He decided to try and subtly try and find out more information. "So, uh, have you had any... unique, experiences with animals since arriving in Mariposa?" Okay, so maybe it wasn't so subtle.

Emily reached into a plastic bag and pulled out a large zip lock bag of ginger snaps, a gift from her mother on her departure. Then she grabbed a jug of milk and set a couple of glasses on the table, adding a napkin next to each glass and a plate in the middle where she poured out some cookies. "Sorry it's un-original but I just got here." She smiled somewhat shyly. She had always loved being hostess but the house wasn't really her yet.
At the question, she glanced at him with a raised eyebrow before gesturing him to take a seat while taking the other. "As for unique experiences, I just got here," she nodded towards the boxes and suitcases that littered the living room, and the paper and plastic bags that littered the kitchen. "If you're asking if I'm an animorph, then yes I am. I have two animals thus far, I can take the form of a black lab because of shadow," she pointed at the dog who barked in greeting. "And a mouse gray mare because of Sky Song. She's in the stables."
She looked back up at the young man. "And you have yet to tell me your name." She waited for him to take the first cookie. While she was new here, it didn't go right with her to give up her manners. No matter how good she knew her Mom's cookies were.

Leroy felt relieved when Emily made it clear that she was an animorph. Now he didn't have to keep wondering. "My name is Leroy," he said as he munched on a cookie. "And these cookies are delicious. Thanks."
"So you can turn into a dog and a horse and a mouse, huh? Or wait. Not a mouse." Leroy tried to graze over his mistake by commenting on her morphs. "I've been a dog. They're cool. I haven't been a horse before, but I've been a donkey. Does that count?"

Emily laughed at the donkey comment. "Mom made the cookies, and as for the donkey... it depends on if you're riding one or not. A mule would be closer." She took note of his relief and smiled. Shadow had relaxed at this point, laying down at Emily's feet with his head resting on his paws. Emily reached down and ran her hand over his back.
"As for mouse... I wouldn't want to be one. Though small and for the most part discreet... they're more trouble than help. No, a snake would be better. Smaller, scary to most humans, and less likely to be attacked. I would do more research on the creatures so that I have at least one for each purpose that shapeshifting can provide." She munched on a cookie thoughtfully.
"A horse and dog were useful on the ranch. I had considered a cat, but I was hoping for a larger cat than a house or farm cat. Granted they could be useful for a lot of things..." she paused with a grin, "but I didn't fancy eating the mice that passed through the area."
"And nice to meet you Leroy. So how long have you been here?" she asked, leaning on the table comfortably. This young man seemed interesting enough, and funny. And shy. That part was strange. He had come to her apartment, yet somehow he seemed awkward. She inclined her head slightly, a habit she had gotten at an early age and never got over.

"Oh boy, how long have I been here?" He counted up the time in his head quickly. "I've been here for just over a year. Wow. That doesn't seem right. Has it really been that long already..." He had no idea how so much time could have gone by so quickly.
Leroy shook the thoughts from his head then got back to the other topic Emily had been talking about. "Anyway. So these other purposes you mentioned that morphing can provide, what are they? Do you mean something like a flying morph, a water morph, a battle morph, and stuff like that?" He didn't wait for her to answer. "Because that is a good idea, acquiring one of each. I wonder why I never did anything like that. I sort of just acquire things on a whim."
He took another bite of his cookie and helped himself to some milk. It seemed Emily may end up revolutionizing his approach to morphing.

Emily smiled as Leroy went on a verbal rampage. She had caught the light going on as he realized what she had meant. "Yes, something like that. But it can be more complex than that. Like you have to think about what you'll be fighting, whether it be 'normal' humans, other animorphs, or whatever. Even other creatures."
She toyed with a lock of her hair, staring at the table and then up at Leroy. "I'm glad you saw me come in. Even though I'm not close to being prepared to play hostess, it has helped me relax a bit." She stood up and began to put the cold and frozen food away. 'i hope you don't mind me cleaning up a bit, I just don't want the food to go bad."
Once the food was away, she sat back down with Leroy and took a drink of her milk. She moved fast when shy, and she had very little experience with strangers. She had been home schooled so that she could help out more on the ranch, and this was quite a rush. She smiled again at Leroy. "So what do you do here?"

"What do I do here?" Emily asked a difficult question. One that Leroy wasn't sure he quite knew how to answer, but he decided to try anyway.
"I guess you could say I... Hmm. Now that you mention it, I don't exactly have any specific tasks. When I'm not working at the local aquarium, I'm keeping an eye out for suspicious activities. Which doesn't really work..."
Leroy suddenly felt like the last year had been largely a waste of his talents. Sure, he had helped stop a few petty crimes, went on a couple missions assigned by SPECTER, but none of what he did seemed to really matter in the grand scheme of things. It seemed that the organization Jeremy had been recently warned about may put an end to that soon, but Leroy knew next to nothing about them.
"I guess I'm sort of a Jack-of-all-trades when it comes to animorphing." Leroy smiled at his own made up word, animorphing. "I do all kinds of different tasks, but I don't specialize in any single one." He shrugged since he didn't know what else to say.

"Don't get out much do you?" Emily asked with amusement, flashing Leroy a crooked smile. As a conversationalist, he seemed like a teen boy who had never spoken to a girl before. Which was as cute as it was funny. Shadow had completely relaxed by this point and licked Leroy's hand, demanding attention. Emily laughed. Shadow certainly didn't have any problems with socializing once he got off his high horse, figuratively speaking. She grabbed another cookie and munched thoughtfully.
"Would you show me around? I need to find some places to help me get this place sorted out." She sat back and relaxed complacently.

"I would be happy to show you around," Leroy said, standing up straight. "Just give me a second to go get a jacket. It was a bit drizzly outside last time I checked. You can come over and check out the apartment where a bunch of the rest of us live while you are waiting. You know, if you want to."
Leroy went to the hallway and walked the short distance to the other apartment. He opened the door and left it that way so Emily could come in if she felt like it. After quickly grabbing a light jacket from his room, Leroy returned to where Emily was. "Where to first?" he asked.

"Lead the way Leroy, though I already know where the stables are. Sky is there. I guess you can show me the sights and uh..." she blushed shyly, looking down at her feet, causing Shadow to press against her right leg. "Maybe even teach me how to work with people. I'm more used to animals, to being alone but for my parents. I hear fitting in is the big thing, though I have never understood the concept of giving up oneself for the sake of having others like you."
She was babbling, she knew, but she couldn't help herself. Though she felt somewhat comfortable around Leroy, she was still wary. After all, there was something strange about this place. Even with others like her, she didn't have much experience with others her age. She couldn't wait to get a job. That gave her an idea.
"You can show me where to apply for jobs. I was kind of dropped off, shown the stable where Sky would stay, and then left at my apartment. Strange considering they had promised job opportunities and then leaving without showing how or where to go. I spent so much time on my parents ranch, I wouldn't know how to start." More babbling, she kept her eyes down, afraid to see Leroy's reaction. Why she cared, was beyond her. Oh right. Maybe it was because he was the first one she had met, her first... "friend" she supposed.
