Naomi heard Rox talking once more and turned her head. Smirking, Naomi said, "Seriously, they're that much." She pointed over at the fish tank. "You said plain, right? So there's a plain. Buy what you see."
Naomi noticed the clenched hand and stood up. "If you don't like the price, you can go somewhere else, I'm sure. Or, I can help with the expenses if you can't pay for it." She grabbed her purse and grabbed some money to hand to Rox. Anything to get her out of here/ "Here."

"Funny? Nope. Serious? Yes. This particular fish," Johnny said as he pointed to it in the bag, "is $16.24. You can look back on the tank if you want too, but that is how much this fish costs." Then he closed his eyes and smiled at Girl Mean in a smarter-than-you way.
When he heard Girl A offer money, Johnny smiled even more. What a girl! Good-looking AND compassionate! She was willing to hand off probably sixteen bucks to a total unnerving stranger. She could make a pretty good Animorph.

When the guy said that the price really was what he said, a simmering rage started to form within Rox. She said she wanted something cheap, then this guy tries to sell her a goldfish that must have been made of actual gold. She had half a mind to just swipe the fish without paying. It would definitely serve him right.
But then the other girl offered to pay. Rox had no qualms with other people buying stuff for her, so she said, "Go for it." Then she motioned for the girl to pay the man. If she didn't have to pay, then she didn't care what the price was. Hopefully it would make the cashier guy feel guilty for trying to rip her off, too.

Naomi smiled and brought her purse to the counter. It was a fake smile but it never looked that way, or at least she hoped not. Fishing out her wallet, she looked at Rox. "Enjoy your fish." She counted out a ten, a five, a one and then a quarter. Handing it to the cashier guy, she said, "You can keep the penny. I won't need it."
After that was paid, she turned back to Rox. "Well, there you go. Paid in full. You need a bowl for that?" She gestured towards the fish bowls within the store. "Or do you have one at home?"

Rox thought about the bowl question, then quickly made up her mind. She didn't know if the place she was moving to had a fish bowl, and she didn't want to carry one around with her. "I'll find something," she said, then grabbed her fish and turned to leave.
After taking a couple steps, Rox turned back because she forgot her two dollars on the counter. But instead of going to grab it, she said to the girl, "you can keep those two dollars if you want. Just don't let that bozo have it." She pointed right at Johnny as she said it. The girl had turned out to be slightly better than she expected so Rox didn't mind leaving two dollars for her. But still, she was glad that she wouldn't have to see either of those two ever again. She walked out the door.

Naomi simply nodded when the girl said that she'd find something. The fish wasn't going to last long in the fish bag, that was for sure. Though she was about to say that she left her two dollars when she turned and said that Naomi could keep it. "Just don't let that bozo have it," with a point of her finger.
Naomi stayed silent until the girl left the store. Raising an eyebrow at Johnny, she asked, "I'm sorry, I didn't realize this was the circus. And if this is so, where's your clown outfit?" She smiled. "That was...interesting to say the least."
Naomi bit her lip, thinking. "I have a question. Maybe you can help me."

As Girl Mean left, Johnny mouthed the words "Sorry" to Girl A after he stuck his tongue out at Girl Mean like a kid in grade-school. He stuck the money into the cash register and then slammed it shut. Then he laughed at the girl's comment. "Sorry, I left it at home along with my red nose and huge shoes." he said with a straight face.
He walked out from behind the counter and walked over to the ferret cage. It wasn't exactly a cage, it was like glass box on a concrete box with no lid. He picked a sleeping ferret up and began petting it as the girl asked for his help with a question. "Sure thing," he quickly said, "What's up?"

Naomi smiled at the guy when she saw him mouth the word, "Sorry." She said, after Rox was gone, "Don't worry about it." She laughed at his remark about leaving his nose and shoes at home. "Aw, darn. I never got to meet a real clown before."
"Sure thing. What's up?" Naomi thought of a way to ask. "Well, I'm new to the city here, and I have an address and everything. I just don't know if my roommates would be willing to let me have a pet; though I really want one. What would you suggest I do?"

"Err, well, one of my roommates is a clown at the circus around here. Settle for that?" Johnny said, thinking of Nicholai. He stroked the ferret a few times as he contemplated Girl A's question.
"Huh, I'm not sure. I guess maybe go over there to check things out before coming back? I'm pretty sure you wouldn't want to buy something only to turn around and give it to a pound." Or if you could morph, you could just acquire it and morph it anytime. That would be way better than having to care for something if your roommates don't like pets. Johnny then had inspiration.
"Can I see the address? I might be able to call them and find out thataway for you." Johnny said. He was willing to do extra work for her, just as long as she was willing to stay around. He was starting to like her.

Naomi smiled at him. "Close enough." She watched as the boy contemplated answering her question. He was cute when he was thinking. Stop it. He may be cute, but he's probably not interested in you. She chided herself.
Naomi nodded. "Right, I wouldn't do that anyways. I hear they kill the animal two weeks after arriving. Of course that was where I used to live." She knew she could just morph the animal if she so wanted, but she felt like having an actual pet.
Naomi grabbed her purse and started scavenging around in it. "You don't have to do that. I can run over real quick if you point me in the right direction. Of course you'd have to know where it is, wouldn't you?" Naomi handed him the address and quickly turned to look at some animals, hoping her blush was not seen. Curse you, blush!

It wasn't. Johnny had already turned away so he couldn't see Girl A's face. He walked over to the cash register (after putting the ferret back in its cage) and reached under the counter for the phonebook. He began flipping through and absent-mindedly reading the address. It wasn't until he was looking for the last number when he realized something. It was the exact same address where he lived.
"Well isn't THAT a coincidence!" Johnny said. "Hey," he said to Girl A, "You shouldn't have a problem. I live in that area. No, in fact, I live in that exact apartment. There is no rule against pets." He slammed the phonebook shut and dropped it under the counter and kicked it back with his foot. He smiled at her as he went back to the ferrets. "I could take you there when my shift ends in," his voice trailed off as he looked at his watch, "twelve minutes. If you want to wait that long?"

Naomi waited patiently as the guy searched for the address. Then it looked like the cashier realized something when he said that it was a coincidence and he lived in the same apartment. "Oh really? That is coincidental." She thought about it for a minute and then said, "Wait, so you and I...have a mutual friend or something that...er...recommended that place?"
The guy looked up at the clock and Naomi smiled back at him. "Twelve minutes. I can wait. I'm in no rush to go anywhere." She ran a hand through her hair and then said, "I suppose I should introduce myself. My name's Naomi." She didn't want to say her last name because then she might say what her sister always said. And before you ask, yes, that's the name of the bear in Brother Bear.

Johnny picked up a different ferret this time and began to stroke it. "Friend, huh? Well if you can call those GHOST people friends. Well, the name was something like GHOST. Might've been PHANTOM or something." He just stood there then, petting the (uber-super-amazingly-cool and completely soft) ferret.
Then she introduced herself. "Huh, Nay-oh-me," he said, drawing out the syllables and letting the name roll over his tongue. "Cool! I'm Johnny. Johnny Wayne, actually, as my name tag says right here." He pointed as the tag on his chest with the hand not holding the ferret.
Twelve minutes to waste...eleven minutes to waste...I've got it! Johnny smiled and put the ferret gently back in its exhibit. Then he turned around to face Naomi. "Would you like to play with the kittens?"

"Ghost people?" Naomi asked, smiling. "I think I know who you mean. Yeah, well. I hear we have to be careful, so here I am being careful. Guess some people can't ask for too much." She shrugged.
Naomi smiled. "Johnny. Nice to meet you; yeah, name tags are useful aren't they?" She looked at the ferret. "The ferret's cute."
Then Johnny asked her if she wanted to play with the kittens and her eyes lit up. "Hey, that would be fun. I know, I sound childish, but I love kittens." She smiled. "Is it allowed here? You won't get fired, will you?"

"Hey! Nothin' childish about liking kittens. I like 'em myself. And no, I won't get fired. It's okay here since we let people who want to buy the dogs or cats prefer to hold them or get to know them first. So they won't make a mistake in which pet they want." Johnny informed Naomi.
Then he gently placed the ferret back in its box and strolled briskly over to the wall of cats and dogs in their cages. Actually, they weren't a real wall. There was a narrow hallway behind them that let the staff open the cages from the back to get the animals out. After all, they didn't want anyone just walking out of there with a dog, considering that the price of the animals could easily range up into the hundreds.
"Which one you want?" He called over to Naomi.
