Maya hadn't been at her job very long, but a few days were enough to make her hate it. There was nothing more frustrating than having so many animals at her fingertips (some she even had to stare at all day) and yet still no real access to them. Instead, she was stuck selling ice cream and chips to bawling children.
She yawned. It was a slow day today. The weather wasn't cooperating, so there weren't many people checking out the zoo. So, she was sitting in her little concession hut, staring at the monkeys across the pathway who were busy screeching and swinging around their cages.
She really wished she worked at the stand closer to the cats... they would have been a much nicer--and quieter--view...

"Hey there," Nancy called as she walked down a little partially hidden path that lead from the metal door that was the entrance to the vet area. The fresh air was welcoming after spending several hours in the labs, doing bloodwork and medical research. She was just a lowly assisstant, not even as good as a nurse. Menial labor was about all she could do.
So she had jumped when it was her lunch break. The lab was destroying her tan so she wanted to spend time outside. And now she had found Maya. Nancy didn't know her very well, but she didn't know anybody here actually. So she waved at Maya and smiled as she leaned her arms on the corner of the concession stand. "Hey, what's up?"

Maya brightened up a little when she noticed her team mate approaching. "Oh hey!" She quickly finished up taking the money of her most recent customer, and handed over their snacks, and then focused her attention on Nancy who had just walked up. "Did you get put in a job here too?"
Then she sighed. "I'm so bored right now. It's just rain, a few kids, and monkeys throwing their poo at each other all day."

"Yes I did. I'm an assisstant to the vet here. Which means I've got to do all of the dirty work." Nancy said with a smile. She was willing to be friendly with Maya. After all, it wasn't like she had any other friends, she being new to the city and all.
"How can you be bored with all of this?" Nancy questioned. "It's amazing! I mean, you can stand here and watch all of this exciting stuff happening all around you! And you have snacks! I'm stuck looking at blood under slides or running pointless errands for people. I wish I had your job." Nancy finished.
"But hey! What have you planned for the rest of this fabulous day? I'm on lunch break right now so I'm free." Nancy smiled and glanced at Maya, to make sure that she wasn't bored with her yet. People usually didn't like it when Nancy was happy and around them. She then skimmed her eyes over the throngs that covered the ground and smiled at them all as she just watched, making frequent glances back at Maya.

"Not much is happening today though," Maya sighed. "This off and on rain means very few people in the zoo. And the monkeys get old real fast." She glanced around her little hut. "I wish I had snacks. I still have to pay for this stuff if I want any of it. No free snacking for me," she smiled.
She leaned on the counter of the window. "Are you getting any hands on work with the animals? Or just the boring lab stuff?"

"But at least you get air," Nancy said with another smile. "I normally look dead or emo after a day in the lab." She gave a little laugh in effort to lighten the mood. She laughed again at maya's dilemma. No snacks? Well, there were worse things that could happen on a job. Like being bitten, scratched, or mauled. Minor incidents.
She laughed even louder when Maya asked if she was around anything. "Me? Not really. I acquired a snake, like, yesterday when I had to sedate it when the nurse who usually does it was sick. No, I'm usually stuck running around and doing every single unimportant task possible. But hey, there could be worse jobs. Like being the janitor here." she honestly did like her job. She just wished she could actually do something with the animals from time to time.
Then she asked another qusetion. "So when do you get off? Think we could go on tour around here or something? Maybe get a little closer to some of the animals, if you know what I mean?" she said with a twinkle of mischief in her eyes.

Maya laughed a little. "True. Being a janitor would totally suck. Can you imagine cleaning up after... elephants?" She shuddered at the thought. "Or even those dang monkeys would be a nightmare..."
Nancy asked her when she was off, and she realized at that moment that she had no idea what time it was. She glanced back at the clock in the little hut, surprised at the time. She was sure the day had been going by way slower than than. "I'm off in about ten minutes, actually. A tour might be cool. I went on one the other day, when I started, but I was being led around by people. Going at our own pace might have it's... advantages..."

"Ugh, no way! I don't even want to think about that!" Nancy said as she mocked poking her finger down her throat. "I feel so sorry for the janitors. Like, what if they fell in something? That would be so gross. Wait nevermind. I'm not thinking about that! Bad imagination! Bad!" Nancy scolded her brain as she slapped her forehead with her palm.
She stopped smacking herself when Maya told her that she was off in a few minutes. "Great!" she beamed and pulled a $10 bill from her purse. She pushed it on the counter between her and Maya and said, "Well, my friend and I are going on a tour around the zoo. I'm buying us both ice cream. I'll take a plain vanilla one. Now what do you think my friend would like? You look like you would know." Nancy smiled as she waited for the order to be filled to take up the remaining time on Maya's shift.
"Also, do you know how creepy it sounds when you just say 'Going at our own pace might have it's... advantages...'? Seriously. It sounds so wrong! But maybe that's just me. I donnu. How about we just forget what I just said? And hurry up with those orders! I can't keep my friend waiting too long!" Nancy grinned for the fact that her friend was having to fill her own ice cream.

"Maybe they hire people without the sense of smell..." Maya pondered to herself. "And who don't mind taking... like... a hundred showers..."
She glanced at the $10 and then what Nancy said slowly dawned on her. She smirked. "I tend to suggest the strawberry, myself. Do you think she'll mind?" She took the money and entered two ice creams into the till, and then got to work making them.
"Oh now you're just being silly," Maya shook her head at the last comments as she finished up the ice creams, chuckling a little. "You know what I mean!" She hoped, at least, that Nancy realized she had meant the chance to maybe get another morph or two, without other people watching or dictating where they went. She finally turned around and handed over the two ice creams, grinning.

Maya's comment sent Nancy on a quick round of laughter. She then replied to Maya's suggestion. "Oh, I think my friend will just adore that flavor. You have very good taste. If I didn't know any better, I would say that you knew her or something. Go figure."
"Yeah, I know what you mean. Just wanted to point out something that could be interpreted differently." Nancy then accepted the ice creams from her friend and began to like the vanilla one. The confectionary delight tasted heavenly to her mouth. In between licks, she asked a quesiton. "So, what animals do you wanna hit first? How about the chimps? Or wolves?"

"Guess I just got lucky," Maya commented casually, wiping her hands off on a paper towel. "Or maybe I'm psychic."
"No more monkeys! I vote wolves first," Maya insisted. No way she would ever willingly look at monkeys or apes for a very long time after this job. She noticed another girl walk into the snack hut, and Maya glanced at the clock, realizing this was her replacement for the evening. "Ohh yes! I'm off! Be out in a sec!" She hurried off to the back to get changed and grab her stuff.

Nancy kept eating her ice cream and holding Maya's until the other girl had come back. Then she handed the strawberry one to her and said, "Wolves it is, then. Now where are they? I forgot. Ooh wait! There's a map!" Nancy pointed at an eight foot high map on a sign that was of the entire zoo. On it were all of the exhibits, shops, bathrooms, shows, etc.
She rushed over there, planning on making the most of her and Maya's break to look for the wolves. By the time she located it, she had eaten half of her ice cream. But then again, she usually ate fast anyways. "Found them!" She cried out as she pointed at the exhibit with her right hand before wiping a few ice cream drops off her shirt.
"C'mon, let's go!" She said, full of ethusiasm.
((You can go-mod them arriving at the wolves if you want.))

Maya was a bit surprised at how fast Nancy had gotten through her ice cream when she looked down at her own, realizing it looked like she had just begun. Then again, Nancy had gotten a head start. And, well, Maya usually took her time with these things...
When they reached the wolf habitat, Maya scanned it quickly. "See any yet?" She forgot to check the map for what kind of wolf they were, so she wasn't quite sure what to expect. "Were there multiple habitats or just this one?"

((Exhibits don's reall have to look like natural habitats. Most zoos I've been to just have grassy ground with maybe rock walls, and maybe plants that live in the animals natural area if the animal is an herbivore. In other words, nothing special.))
"Uh, no, uh...wait, there's one!" Nancy said as she pointed to a moving patch of grey along the rock wall background to the exhibit. The wolves habitat was in a 'valley' of sorts. Probably designed that way so the wolves couldn't get out. The viewing area was at least twelve feet above the wolves heads. "A grey wolf," Nancy said as she glanced at the information plate on the railing.
"And there's another! Awww, its got a pup! How cute! See them, Maya?" Nancy said. She saw about two other wovles dotted throughout the mini-forest covering the back half of the exhibit. One was drining from a small pool of water, two more (probably imature pups) were wrestling. "Good idea Maya!" Nancy beamed. "I think going at our own pace does have its...advantages." She said, with a voice that had a few implications. Then she laughed it off.

"Aw there they are," she nodded, scanning the habitat some more. She couldn't help but watch the mother and her pup the most, so interested in the idea that a stereotypically fearsome creature was also the very opposite. "The baby is adorable!"
"Oh don't get creepy on me now!" she laughed in response to Nancy's comment, and then glanced back down at the wolves in thought. "Hmm... do you think it would be possible?"
