Bruno grabbed at Charles as he tried to escape, making sure that he never got too good of a grip on him. After a couple seconds the owl's talons left a few gashes, then Charles was gone. Escaped.
Charles apologized, but Bruno did his best to act like he hadn't heard it. It definitely wasn't the worst beating he had ever taken and there were more important things to worry about. Like his own acting skills.
"It got away," Bruno said into the back of the van. "I'll go get the other one though. Wait there." Of course the only one listening was the unconscious nothlit, but he had to keep up appearances.
And so, as he tried to kept one eye on Charles and the yeerks, he walked over to where the condor was. It was a lot smaller than he remembered it since he was no longer looking at it from a peacock's perspective, but it was still a very large bird.
<<You... you stay away from me,>> the bird said, more scared than threatening. Its wing was still bent in an awkward way. <<I'll bite you. Don't you dare try anything.>> It tried and failed to scoot itself under some shrubs.
Bruno walked toward it with his arms outstretched, ready to grab it if it tried anything funny. When he was just a few feet away, it jumped straight at him. He caught it, but it used its beak to tear gashes in the side of his face, neck and shoulder. He quickly reached up one hand to try and grab its ugly head, but then it started wriggling and trying to pry itself free. It reminded him of the live octopi he one tried eating. He only managed to get those to stop squirming by acquiring them.
Which gave him an idea. Bruno concentrated on acquiring the bird as he carried it over to the van. As soon as he reached the vehicle, he opened the door and climbed in and used Charles's broken broom handle and cracked the condor over the head, knocking it out just like the owl. The hard part was over.
Now he just had to let Charles do his infiltration while he himself figured out what to do with the unconscious birds.
<<What a disaster,>> Hesak 443 said to her one remaining lackey. She knew there was a reason she was in charge instead of the two with the more powerful bird morphs, but seriously, how could they both manage to get defeated by a land-bound rhinoceros? It was ridiculous. And now their newfound enemy was taking them prisoner. Already Ordet 645 was in the rear compartment of their terrestrial vehicle.
<<Hesak...>>
<<What!>> She looked down at the van once more and this time noted something that was actually a turn for the better. Ordet was in the process of escaping. <<Finally, a little competence.>>
Then, to Ordet directly, <<I hope you got a good look at their faces, otherwise you may have been better off staying with the humans.>>
