Leroy looked up at the rock walls on either side of him. He hoped that no boulders came loose and landed on his head. He always got nervous in situations like this. Where there were inherent dangers that he couldn't control. Like being in deep water, or being outside while it was lightning a lot. He would just have to deal with it. "Who's idea was this again? Sure, the gorge is a nice secluded place where we can practice our morphs, but we are practically in the middle of nowhere. What if one of us gets hurt?" Somehow they had gotten the bright idea to practice morphing as a group, so now some of them were in a big crack in the earth getting ready to change into animals. "I hope I don't end up regretting this."

"Don't look at me," Nate shrugged, glancing around thoughtfully. It was true, the place seemed a little shaky to him, so he was repressing the overwhelming urge to climb on stuff. Even if only for a little while...
He sat himself down on a larger boulder sitting near the little stream in the middle of the gorge and then eyed the sky. "Looks like a good day for some flight," he suggested, noting the calm breeze in the air.

A good day for some flight? That reminded leroy of the new morph he wanted to try out. The other day on his way to work when he passed by the park, he managed to acquire a cool-looking duck with a blue beak from the duck pond. He had almost forgotten about it until now.
"Flying sounds like a good idea to me. I actually acquired something that can fly other than my weevil morph." Leroy didn't wait for confirmation for the plan. He began to morph. He hoped that this kind of duck was a good flier.

Nate couldn't help but laugh watching Leroy's morph process. He definitely enjoyed the part when the duck bill appeared. He wished he had a camera on him at the time.
"I think I'll play around in my other morph," he commented. "It's way too fun not to have some more practice with it." He got off the rock and started concentrating on his most recent Border Collie morph.

"Sorry guys. It was my idea," Johnny admitted. It had looked fun. but the trek there hadn't been so fun. Nor had climbing down the rocks. He decided to stay a good-natured distance away from his friends in case one of them decided to throw a rock at him. "If we get hurt, Leroy, can't we just morph? I think SPIRIT, or whatever it's called, said that morphing can do stuff like that."
Then he kind of shut up as the other two began to morph. Leroy was morphing something with a huge blue mouth. Johnny couldn't tell what Nate was morphing. He decided to waitt o see what they morphed before he followed their example. After all, he didn't want his gecko to be surrounded by potential enemies. Just like me at the bird show. Johnny still vividly remembered his experience with that massive golden eagle. It had looked reallky hungry that day and it had kept staring at his eyes. Not creepy at all.

Can't we just morph? Leroy was pondering Johnny's response for what to do if they got hurt as he was morphing. I am sure it would still hurt, and I doubt that if a boulder smashed my head in that I would be able to morph it away, but he has a point. Then he noticed that Nate was morphing a dog.
<<What? We aren't going to practice flying?>> Leroy was mildly disappointed, but he didn't think that a duck and a kestrel could exactly fly side by side anyway. Besides, that would have looked awkward and drawn attention to them. <<Well, I am still going to practice flying.>>
And with that, Leroy pushed off from the ground, flapped his wings furiously, and took to the air. It was amazing! Much cooler than flying in his bug morph. He felt like a fighter pilot zooming through the landscape. He was unable to stop, but who would want to anyway? He circled around quickly, then came in for a landing on the shallow stream bed. <<That was awesome!>>

<<I never said that!>> Nate said, almost gleefully now that he was finished morphing. He couldn't help it with the dog instincts kicking in. He wanted to play!! <<I just said it looked like a nice day for flying!>>
He hopped around in the stream, sniffing at everything. Rocks, shrubs, Johnny's feet. It was all sensory overload with the border collie's senses. He wanted to check everything out. But first...
He lifted his back leg. <<Ready... aim...>>

((I'm gonna assume they walked there since they hadn't tried their bird morphs then.))
"Dude! Go behind a bush or something!" Johnny yelled at Nate. Not that a dog peeing on something wasn't an everyday sight, but Johnny knew that there was a person behind that dog's mind. And that just made it GUH-ROOOSSS! He backed away from Nate. And now that he was in the company of a duck and a dog were two guys had been before, Johnny decided to give into peer pressure and morph.
The dalmatian. He had morphed it once before but that was only long enough to locate the keys to the register at his work. He had sent someone back into storgae to go find a wild goose chase while he looked for his "misplaced" keys. So he needed more practice with it. Besides, the eagle creeped him out, amazing or not.
He kicked his shoes off and took off his jean jacket, which exposed the black t-shirt of his morphing outfit. He then carefully folded his jacket and placed it on a dry rock (after dusting it off, of course). It was his favorite jacket and he didn't want to get it dirty.
Then his ears moved up on his head and lengthened. Then they folded over. His vision wavered as the color drained out of almost everything. Then anything in the distance became blurry. He looked down at his hands but the only thing different there were dark spots on his arms. Dalmatian fur pretty much looks the same in black-and-white as it does in color. It's black and white.
THen his toes shriveled up and after a couple of minutes, he was a dog. A happy dog. An insanely HAPPY dog! A rock! Eat it! Johnny leaped several feet and pounced on a rock. He picked it up in his mouth and chewes. This was HEAVEN!

Aim? Aim wha- oh man. Leroy looked away automatically when he noticed what Nate was doing. He wasn't really embarrassed, it was just an automatic reaction. But Johnny seemed pretty put off by it. Leroy's older brother used to do stuff like that all the time, so he was used to it.
<<Just don't aim for the water,>> Leroy said as he paddled around in circles. The duck didn't swim very fast, but it was easy. He dunked his head and stuck his feet in the air. <<This is kind of fun!>> By now he noticed that Johnny was a dog too. Leroy was starting to feel left out and contemplated going into his own dog morph, but he eventually decided to remain a duck for now.
<<Hey Johnny. I've never seen you use that morph before. Did you just get it? Did you break into a fire station or something?>> He laughed inwardly as Johnny went after a rock.

Nate couldn't help but bark at the weird thing swimming around in circles in the water. In fact, it looked kinda tasty. Or, at least it looked like it would be super fun to chase!! YEAH LET'S DO THAT!!
He was just about to dive for it when his brain snapped to reality. No! That's Leroy! Not a tasty dog treat! he scolded himself. Okay okay, focus, Nate! He sniffed the ground some more, trying to figure out the readings. He smelled another dog. Johnny, he realized, spotting the new form of his teammate. He barked at him out of the instincts, and then hopped around a bit.

Waitasecond! What am I doing? Ugg, this rock is slimy. Johnny filtered his influence through the dog's mind and released the rock. Much better. Then he "heard" Leroy. <<Uh, nope. I actually got it in the park a day ot two after our burglary bust. Remember that? Anyways, an old lady was walking her dog and it just ran up to me. So I acquired it.>>
Then the dog took control again. ANOTHER ROCK! He leaped at it but a bark stopped him. Another dog? This was his territory. That dog should get away. He turned and glared at the other dog and then began barking. The "woofs" echoed off the sides of the chasm and multiplied his barks. Johnny slowly lowered the volume until he had control of the dog again. That dog was sneaky. Johnny had to make sure to never underestimate it again.
<<So, uh, what now?>>

Leroy paddled further from the shore when Nate looked like he was about ready to jump in. He didn't, thankfully, so Leroy just kept paddling around. But then both of them started barking, so he threw a couple of his own quacks into the mix. What was with those two?
<<So, uh, what now?>> he heard Johnny ask. <<I don't know,>> he replied, <<You said yourself that this was your idea. Aren't we practicing our morphs?>> That reminded him. He had another morph that he hadn't gotten to try out yet. He started to demorph in the shallow water.
<<Hey Nate. Remember the circus? I think I am about to become a 'ton' of fun.>> Leroy laughed at his own ridiculously lame joke.

<<I got mine at work,>> Nate explained to Johnny. <<He was a stray they brought in.>> Nate remembered back to the other night when he had been trying to mop the floors and the dog wouldn't stop yelping at him. He got so fed up, he finally got his hand into the cage and acquired it just to calm him down so that Nate could finish the job.
<<Well you have been needing to hit the gym, you know...>> Nate snickered at Leroy, sitting down and scratching behind his ear with his back foot. <<Just be careful around these boulders dude. This stuff is shifty even under human feet.>

<<Oh yeah, right. Morph practicing.>> Johnny said. That meant to practice his morph. So why not learn what a dalmatian did best? He started sniffing. The nostrils on the canine were amazing! It was like it had recorded everything in the area for like, a month! He could smell a raccoon, a kind of snake and about a dozen other animals. Why hadn't he acquired the dog earlier? It might have come in more handy during the burglar mission that he and Leroy had undergone.
His mind then picked up Leroy's chatter. <<Ton of fun fromt he circus? Leroy! Did you acquire the fat lady? What did you do that for?>> He twisted his head around and tilted it to the side with one ear raised. That was another secret weapon that the dog had. Dogs could assume the most pathetic faces that nobody could resist.

Leroy shuddered at the thought of becoming an exceptionally large lady. "No, that is definitely not what I acquired." Now that he had finished demorphing, he began to morph into an asian elephant. "You will just have to wait and- Eww"
Leroy's ears practically exploded as they grew to the size of beach blankets. Then a ropey tail sprouted from his rear and his limbs began to swell. Next two of his teeth elongated and formed tusks. Full sized tusks. The elephant at the circus must have had its trimmed because he didn't remember it having such large tusks.
He continued to grow and grow and turn grey. The last change was the nose. Shloop, it sprouted outward. <<Not the prettiest morph, I suppose.>> He was now a full grown elephant.
